This true seal is the largest of the pinniped and carnivoran in the world. Adult males are six times larger than the polar bear and have a trunk-like nose, absent in females, which are much smaller than the males. In Punta Ninfas, Patagonia, the breeding season occurs from September to December, and the moulting season from January to April.
