Desert Horned Lizard
Phrynosoma platyrhinos

Location

Bruneau Dunes State Park, ID, USA

Date

23/04/2021

Description

Horned lizards are sometimes called horny toads, though they are indeed reptiles and not amphibians as true toads are. These charismatic lizards are chunky and slow moving, sometimes not moving at all as you approach, in hopes that their excellent camouflage will prevent you from seeing them. See in the image how well the color and texture matches the sandy habitat this lizard lives in! I can't help but feel a sense of wonder at how well some animals blend in with their environment!
